Toast Box - Food Republic, Pavilion - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Toast Box

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've just returned from my trip to Europe and due to the lack of internet access and available time, I wasn't able to blog about my European adventures but will get to that shortly.

En-route back to Sydney, I had another stopover in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for one night. How I missed good Asian food in the past month. I was so pleased to finally have decent food that was not fries, pizza, pasta or bread.

My first meal for breakfast was from Toast Box.

Toast Box originates from Singapore, reflecting the coffee shops from the 60s and 70s, where the common practice for breakfast was a fragrant cup of Nanyang Coffee accompanied by freshly toasted bread.

It is situated within the food court called Food Republic, located within the huge shopping mall, Pavilion.

I got the 'Set A Meal (MYR 8.80 plus 6% tax)' which included a kopi (coffee) or the (tea), kaya toast and two eggs.

I love, love, love kaya toast. Kaya is a spread made from eggs, sugar and coconut milk and flavoured with pandan. I forgot how good it was till I had it again. It was so delicious with the thick slices of butter in between the two slices of perfect toasted bread.

I'm actually not a fan of overly runny and partially cooked eggs.  I struggled to finish the two eggs, but that because of my personal taste preference. The egg is usually cracked and then soya sauce and pepper is added which is then eaten and scooped with the spoon. However, it is cooked well and a favourite amongst the locals.

My kind of coffee. Not overly bitter, not too sweet and the right balance. Kopi O served hot or cold is a satisfying drink where the coffee is freshly brewed and made to order.

I also got a 'Kuih Salat (MYR 2.50 plus 6% tax)' which is a pandan custard rice cake and had it as an afternoon snack. Pandan has got to be one of my favourite food flavourings and this dessert hit the spot.

I wish I was in Malaysia for longer to be able to try out more items. I will be back soon.

Please open a Toast Box in Australia!

  1. YES Toast Box is great, second only to Ya Kun from Singapore, which is arguably slightly better due to cracking the eggs for you (and possibly slightly better toast). If they brought it here prices would have to be way higher though.

    1. Unfortunately I couldn't find a Ya Kun in Kuala Lumpur but I've tried it on my previous visits to Singapore and definitely think it's better. Wouldn't mind paying extra but don't know if there is the market here for it.
