Mr Nice Cafe 好好先生西餐厅 - Jingan - Shanghai, China

Mr Nice Cafe is a cosy café located in Jingan, one of the central districts of Shanghai. It’s easily accessible by train and you can’t really miss it cause it situated close to the famous Jingan Temple.

You wouldn’t expect to find decent western food in China would you? One would usually be acquainted with faux western food that's usually below average or fusion style. You’ll be surprised because we definitely were. Shanghai doesn’t really have a big cafe culture yet, as compared to say Korea where you see an abundance of little cafes serving great food and coffee.

The cafe is extremely popular with the younger adults and does get busy during lunch and dinner. There are limited seats downstairs and more available upstairs.

They offer bistro food and if you feel like high tea in the afternoon you could do that too.

Given that it was quite humid in Shanghai, the best way to cool down was to have a nice cold drink.

The ‘Grapefruit Green Tea’ was refreshingly tasty and served in such a cute pot with a swirly straw.

The ‘Orange Juice’ is freshly squeezed.

‘Spicy Seafood Pasta (RMB 58.00)’ was my dish of choice.  The balance of flavours was just right with a hint of chilli. There was enough sauce to coat the spaghetti and a generous amount of fresh seafood.  The spaghetti was cooked al-dente. I would definitely order this again if I came back.

‘Spaghetti Bolognese (RMB 55.00)’ is a classic dish and usually the safest option when presented on a menu.  This one didn’t disappoint. A good combination of flavours from the mince, tomato and garlic.

Having stalked their Instagram account, I was drooling over every picture of their Mille Feuille, a French pastry with multiple layers of puff pastry and crème patisserie in between.

And here it is. That was the most anticipated dish of my entire trip. If you know me well, you would know how much I love eating cakes. Who doesn’t love a good dessert? Way too pretty to eat, just look at this beauty!

The ‘Strawberry Napoleon Cake (RMB 38.00)’ is their signature dessert.  Crispy layers of flaky pastry are separated by a smooth and light cream, then topped with fresh strawberries. It's a match made in heaven.Usually these desserts could be too sweet but their version was perfect and had the right balance of sweetness.

Can I have the whole cake please?

This was one of my favourite restaurants in Shanghai. I enjoyed the laid back atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of city life. You could sit there for hour’s chit chatting away with your friends if you had the time.

Textbook Boulangerie Patisserie - Alexandria - Sydney, Australia

Textbook Boulangerie Pattisserie offers delicious pastries, cakes and bread.

Located on busy Botany Road in Alexandria, its been open for close to a year now and has garnered a following after making its rounds on social media.

After having lunch at BOB, a pop up restaurant in Rosebery by Three Blue Ducks, we quickly drove down the road to to the patisserie to have dessert.

Arriving with minimal time before closing, most of the small cakes were sold out. With less than half an hour to go, we chose our cakes, got our coffees and scoffed everything down. We even got some cakes to take away. So greedy we are. How could one resist? The cakes are all so pretty.

The 'White Chocolate, Mango, Kaffir Lime & Coconut Cake (8.50)' tastes as good as it looks. I'm drawn by the Asian inspired flavours. Encased in a white chocolate mousse wall and filled with coconut dacquoise and layers of kaffir custard and mango jelly. A beautiful creamy dessert that's not too sweet.

The pastel green 'Apple Crumble Cake ($8.50)' is one of their most popular cakes for a reason. It's smooth, glossy and has amazing textures. The crumbly biscuit base and the apple custard mousse go so well together, with bits of poached cinnamon apple pieces hiding within.

'The Blueberry Cheesecake ($8.50)' looks aesthetically amazing with deep purple impressions. A picture perfect dome shaped cheesecake that is not too rich nor too heavy, balanced out by the thick biscuit base.

Texbook Patisserie have been releasing new croissant flavours every weekend that are strictly limited in quantities. Recent savoury flavours have included truffle and foie gras. Apparently you have to go early in the morning to grab one one these delicacies as they do sell out quickly.

Worth going to for a decent sweet fix if you are in the area.

Allpress Espresso Cafe - Rosebery - Sydney, Australia

Allpress Espresso Cafe

Allpress grinds their coffee beans on site and serves their coffee fresh to the customer. They sure make a mean coffee but be prepared to wait during morning hour rush. Their iced coffees are just beyond any normal ice coffee.

I'm not sure if they bake their pastries/cakes/scrolls on site or outsource but some of them are sure deliciously good.

The 'Cinnamon Scrolls' are pricey at $5.50 but they are absolutely delicious. Moist and full of flavour.

The 'Friands' are a great afternoon tea cake. Nice and moist.

The 'Maple Pastry ($5.00)' is overly sweet and drenched with maple syrup but is crunchy and buttery like how a pastry should be.

This 'Pastry ($2.00)' was a special they had on the day and again it had a hint maple syrup in it but wasn't as overwhelming as the other one. Think they charged me the wrong price on this one.

One of my favourite flavoured cakes in the world.

The taro cake from Savoy is not only cheap but it's extremely delicious. At $21.00 for a small size cake with generous taro filling and fresh cream, this has got to be one of the must try cakes if you like taro.

These little 'Ingots ($3.80)' as they call them, are light sponge cakes with a custard filling. The sponge is so light and airy, it melts in your mouth. The custard cream is just delicious and whipped to perfection.

Savoy Cake Shop - Haymarket - Sydney, Australia

Savoy

I love eating taro cake, especially the one from Tim Tim's in Cabramatta. However, the quality hasn't been as good as it use to be and it seems to be getting more expensive everytime I return.

My friend A has always told me that her aunt would bring over a taro cake for family gatherings and it was one of the best she has tasted but she didn't know the name of the store and only knew it was from Burwood. After doing some searches on the trusted Google site I found the place to be Savoy which had a few locations around Sydney.

Savoy Cake has stores in Haymarket, Chatswood, Burwood and Cabramatta. I was in the city so I dropped into the Haymarket store after I had lunch at Zilver. I got the 9inch taro cake costing $19.50 which is a bargain considering I normally pay about $40 for this cake at Tim Tim's. This is probably due to the lack of fruit and decoration on the cake but that's how I like it. Minimal.

With minimal detailing on the cake and no fruit in sight, it is a very plain looking cake.  Fresh cream layered together with taro paste makes the cake taste smooth and creamy. The inside sponge is soft, moist and not too sweet. A great tasting cake liked by everyone in the family.
